NIGHTHAWKS DO THE DOUBLE
The Chelmsford Nighthawks travelled to the link centre in Swindon this weekend to face the Swindon Panthers in the final of the summer cup.
After going all season with out losing a game of which has never been done in the history of the cup, the Hawks met up a riverside at 2pm to travel the long journey by coach for a 8pm face off at Swindon, expectations were high and the players were in good spirit prepared and ready with jelly babies and pasta on hand for consumption.
After a short stop a Reading for refreshments the Hawks arrived at the link centre around half past five in time to watch some of the bronze medal game, with this game finished the Hawks changed and stepped on to the ice for a good warm up with a good 150 plus crowd watching 120 plus being Swindon fans but this did not phase the Chelmsford players.
Period 1. Chelmsford started strong with some great skating but it was Swindon that got the first goal with a great break away effort, the Hawks stepped up a gear and unphased by the Swindon goal equalized with a well worked goal themselves with this the momentum changed to the Hawks favor and they took the lead making the score at the end of the 1st 2-1 to Chelmsford.
Period 2. This period saw the ref swallow his whistle and every movement he made a player received a penalty in some of the worst refing seen all season on both sides, players got thrown out of the game for no reason what so ever and the whole flow of the game was upset, Swindon took advantage of this and took the lead with a couple of scrappy goals Chelmsford equalized but it got ruled out due to the a Swindon player getting a penalty??? End of the 3rd 3-2 to Swindon.
Period 3. After a rousing speech by Chelmsford’s coach in the changing room the Hawks come out all guns blazing not wanting to return to the Riverside without both cups, and what a period it was Swindon did not know what had hit them, 2mins in the Hawks had equalized and this time the goal stood, 2 mins later Hawks took the lead and then there was no looking back Swindon lost the plot there coach got thrown out and the Chelmsford bench waved him goodbye, with this the Hawks scored yet another couple of quick goals and with 5 mins left of the game the Hawks could feel victory in the palm of there hands, and with some great support from the travelling fans the final buzzer sounded an the Hawks had secured victory 6-3 over the Panthers, taking the league and cup double trophies back to Chelmsford.
